Printer Drivers and PostScript Printers (for Windows)

Post Script Language

The two primary print languages in use today are PostScript and PCL. We can use files from either of these languages, but you must specify the correct printer driver for it to work properly and at the highest resolution. The highest quality output machines use PostScript, so for best results select a PostScript driver.

You can download the latest printer driver, with instructions, from Adobe's website. We can also give you a diskette or e-mail you a self-extracting Zip file with PostScript 4.01 and several useful PPD's. You must choose a PostScript printer and have its PPD file on hand to install the driver.

PostScript Printer Descriptions (PPD'[s)

Have you noticed that your files look different if you copy them and take them to another computer and printer, even when both machines use the same program? Hardware, the output device (printer or imagesetter or digital copier) determines what your work will look like. Printer descriptions tell the computer how the hardware works and PPD's dictate how your application places text and graphics.

Once you have the PostScript driver it is simple for you to install one or two of our PostScript Printer Description (PPDs) on your computer. Double click My Computer, then Printers, then Add Printer. Choose Local Printer, manufacturer HP. If your job will be on regular or legal size paper choose Laser Jet 6P/6MP Post Script. For oversized or side-by side pages use our 11 x 17 LaserJet 4V/4MV PostScript. Since this printer isn't attached to your computer, choose the Port File. For clarity change the printer name to something like "Independence 8.5x14" or "IP 11x17." Click No for a test page and Finish.

PostScript Files

It is most economical for you to provide Post Script files. We are able to print these directly to an output device (usually on film from an imagesetter) but we cannot open these files to look at or alter them. Follow the directions in your software manual or phone us for instructions. We recommend that you send BOTH the "native" and the PostScript files in case of errors. Be sure to include fonts and graphics separately.
